Having celebrated its 40th birthday in November 2010, the Sinfonia continues to go from strength to strength.

Since its inception, it has grown from being a very small group of instrumentalists comprising staff, students and friends of the North Staffs Polytechnic, into an orchestra regularly giving concerts of major works.

At the time when the polytechnic received its university status, the Sinfonia became an independent society. It performs a variety of classical music, baroque, classical and modern music although occasionally gives a light music programme.

Although its complement is essentially that of a “Haydn / Mozart” orchestra the Sinfonia has been known to venture into the romantic period for large scale works. It has accompanied choral societies on a number of occasions and has also toured abroad.

We currently have vacancies for all string players and for a French Horn and Bassoon.
